Favorite Mixes from March 2021

The number of mixes that we listened through in the past few weeks was astonishing. When a month like this happens, 20 mixes to pick is too little, but we have to make a cut. The selection is diverse and covers a broad spectrum of electronic music, so we are sure you’ll find a soundtrack for your current mood.

Prins Thomas - Praise you (Shinichi Atobe Tribute Mix)

A few weeks ago, Stamp The Wax posted this great mix with a fantastic idea (and execution). The master of 'patient tension-building (as STW called him), Prins Thomas, included Atobe in the footnote homage of his sixth album 'Ambitions', alongside luminaries from all sounds and ages. As a mark of how much Atobe's work has impacted his own, Thomas has paid tribute with an hour mix. This is an excerpt of what Thomas said about the mix: Every now and then, I've been toying with the idea of doing (for my personal enjoyment) a mixtape made exclusively from one artist's work, something to listen to uninterrupted and a chance to listen to music I know well in a new context and setting. Although Atobe's music is definitely best presented in the raw form, I thought it would be a fun challenge to bridge together some of my favorites and see if I could come up with something worth accompanying a short drive out of town, a long commute to work etc.

The mix was made in the studio, and several of the tracks have been edited, pitch-shifted and/or altered to benefit the mix. The tracklist is the order, but some tracks do re-appear throughout the mix."

Khotin - Dekmantel Podcast 314

It's impossible to go through all the good mixes every month, so gems like this one get 'lost' sometimes. The artist behind my favorite album of 2020, Khotin, made this beautiful mix for Dekmantel podcast series. The mix is a definition of an excellent downtempo. It's eclectic, melancholic, and melodic, with mood changes every so often to keep you engaged throughout this hour and a half. There's nothing more enjoyable to listen to than a well-executed eclectic set, and that's exactly what this mix is.

Arkajo - Inveins Podcast 077

It's very nice to see/hear Arkajo back in action after several months of hiatus. In his latest mix for Inveins, Arkajo reminds us why he is one of the finest players when it comes to the 'rhythm section'. His signature tribal techno style shines in its best light in this mix and makes us longing for dark, sweaty dance floors even more.

Neele - See You Soon XI

IFZ Leipzig resident Neele is behind the 11th installment of LARJ's "See You Soon" ambient podcast series and this mix might be my favorite yet from the series. Neele is known as a DJ with broad music knowledge, and in this mix, she presents her "home-listening" side, which is equally impressive as when she is behind the decks ripping the dancefloors across Europe apart. The mix is eclectic and very well thought through, so each change in a mood or rhythm makes perfect sense. Needless to say, the tracklist is just brilliant.

Stephen Bishop - 100 % Opal Tapes

Stephen Bishop, the founder of one of the most respected record labels from the UK in the last decade, Opal Tapes created this fantastic retrospective mix made exclusively from music released on Opal Tapes and its sub-labels, Black Opal, VANILLA, and Zabte Sote. Bishop made the mix ahead of the launch of merchandise collaboration between Opal Tapes and Inverted Audio, and this is what Bishop said about the mix: 'Lots of music has come out since 2012. All sub-labels included, there are around 265 releases under the brolly, and even though nine years is a while, it's flown by, so a retrospective mix is kind of a weird thing to do. There's so much to include or exclude. I've tried to find the connection line throughout that period and how sound can be used to build up or destroy feeling and ideas.'

Jane Fitz - Patterns of Perception 82

I usually enjoy Fitz's radio show on Rinse FM, but for this month, one of my favorite podcast series, Patterns Of Perception, hosted a mix that is crying out loud to be played on some killer sound system in front of the smiling crowd. A few words from Jane herself about the mix: "A bit of me was kind of longing for playing on the side of a Japanese mountain again or for all those festivals you do in the summer," she says. "I wanted to have people stomping on a forest floor."

Neel - Polifonic Podcast 035

Neel, one of the mainstays from the vibrant Italian Techno scene, doesn't cease to impress us with each new release, with each new mix. This mix, in particular, is an immaculate techno voyage that is seamlessly put together and explores all shades of Techno. Someone referred to Neel as 'a true modern techno craftsman'. I couldn't agree more. This is how 21st-century Techno should sound.

XDB - Chubby! Podcast 089

Kosta has done it again! Very few DJs can constantly deliver such good mixes as Kosta does. Whenever I listen to his mixes, I always question the Shazam app's existence since it can't recognize anything, and all the tracks are too good, so I just go back and listen to the mix again and again. Kosta Athanassiadis, aka XDB, made this mix for Chubby! podcast series, and as usual, it defines quality House music. The internet algorithm should be programmed so that the first thing it pops up is XDB's mix when you type in House music DJ mix. Well done, Kosta!
